Derrick “DB” Bedford was raised in Oakland, California which is known as the one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. When other kids were doing homework and navigating the jangly uptake of adolescent hormones, “DB” was dealing pot in East Oakland’s Brookfield neighborhood. The money rolled in and he quickly established himself as a factor in the drug trade. No stranger to trouble and obstacles, “DB” spent over a decade in and out of Juvenile Hall and County Jails. One particular court appearance would change the mindset of the once infamous street hustler.
Fourteen years ago “DB” stood before the honorable Judge Larry Goodman while facing five years in state prison for a very serious offense. Tired of living a life of injustice, he requested to address the court. “DB” had a heartfelt conversation with the Judge and as a result was given one last chance to prove himself worthy and of value to his community. What happens over the next few years is phenomenal. Through determination, resiliency, and courage, he became a positive role model for his community, a national award winner, and a powerful motivational speaker. “DB” is guaranteed to motivate troubled youth, and change the perception of the adults and/or authority figures that supervise them.
Today he is employed at the same probation department where he once was incarcerated and directly supervises some of the same officers that once locked him in a cell. He also has become good friends with Judge Goodman and has earned nothing but trust and respect from him.
